        A surprise found on

the dancing floor during

a visit to Montreal, Canada

The foliage in late fall in the north-east of Canada is magnificent. It was the last day of this visit twelve years ago. We stayed in a hotel in downtown Montreal.

After dinner, I back to the hotel room looked out the window. People packed with heavy coat walked along the street shinned with colorful lighting. I took a look at the clock and realized that it was a little earlier to go to bed.

Suddenly the doorbell rang, my friends in the next room invited us to go together for a joy-walking tour of nite living in the city.  It was a frigidly cold night; we did a sort of street window shopping. We walked thru a couple of shopping malls and suddenly heard quite a strong beat of the music came from a door. Curiously look at the sign nearby painted  “Do-Ray-Me” dance studio.

My friends and my wife and I are ballroom dance lovers. Without any consideration, we push the door, enter into the reception room. It was a studio weekly dance night. Peek to the floor. It was just open half an hour ago. Dancers already crowed on the floor; I believed that most of them are studio students. More surprised that seniors are everywhere on the floor.

The music is hot, most dancing to the beats of Latin step cha-cha, rumba, mambo, salsa, merengue and disco, west/east coast swing, jive, and the club dance. Less of ballroom dances such as waltz, tango needed a more massive floor to dance. Took a look at the class schedule posted on the wall, you will know why.

We left earlier because of unfit shoes. One thing still in my mind is why the seniors living there like to learn dancing and the way they showed on the floor with great energy.  Maybe only a few golf courses can survive under the long and cold season. Already sparsely up-ground outdoor activities fields don’t exist either.
